Multi-Finger Caliper Logging
High-Resolution Internal Casing Caliper Tool Measurement for Integrity Assessment
At Reliance Oilfield Services, our Multi Finger Caliper Tool (MIT), often called the Multi Finger Inspection Tool or simply caliper tool, delivers precise, reliable internal diameter (ID) profiling to assess casing and tubing condition across Western Canada. This mechanical wireline caliper tool uses an array of independent fingers to map the internal pipe surface with exceptional detail, detecting corrosion, pitting, metal loss, wear, scale buildup, ovality, deformation, and other anomalies.
We offer multiple multi finger caliper tool variants — 24-finger, 40-finger, and 60-finger — optimized for different tubular sizes, from small-diameter tubing to larger casing strings. Deployed via wireline or coil tubing in memory or surface readout (SRO) modes, these caliper tools are supported by our specialty logging department and experienced technicians for expert operation and accurate data in any well environment.
How the Multi Finger Caliper Tool Works:
Downhole tools evaluate casing condition versus depth using mechanical profiling. As the multi finger caliper tool traverses the well:
Downhole mechanical profiling evaluates casing condition versus depth:
Deployment by Specialty Logging Experts — Conveyed on memory or SRO via wireline or coil tubing using our conventional, mast, or heli-portable units across Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.
Independent Finger Array — 24 to 60 high-resolution fingers extend to contact the casing ID, measuring radial distances from the tool centerline for a full 360-degree profile.
Data Acquisition — Continuous high-resolution ID data recorded in real-time (SRO) or full memory mode, with built-in GR and CCL for accurate depth correlation.
Advanced Processing & Interpretation — Post-job analysis by our in-house team compiles datasets into detailed 3D visualizations, deviation maps, cross-sections, corrosion reports, and defect highlighting for clear, actionable insights.

Key Wireline Logging Applications & Detection
The Multi Finger Caliper Tool excels at internal focused diagnostics, identifying deviations in internal diameter that signal events like:
Corrosion and metal loss detection quantifies internal pitting, general thinning, erosion, or gouging to evaluate remaining integrity.
Deformation and damage mapping identifies ovality, buckling, bending, splits, fractures, holes, or mechanical damage.
Scale, paraffin, asphaltene, or solids buildup measures internal restrictions or deposits affecting flow or barrier placement.
Casing wear assessment verifies internal wear from drilling, rod, or long-term suspension.
High-volume internal assessments — Verification of casing integrity for injection/disposal wells (AER Directive 051).
Enhanced Capabilities & Advantages
The Multi Finger Caliper Tool excels at internal focused diagnostics, identifying deviations in internal diameter that signal events like:
Multi-finger Variant Flexibility — Multiple MIT (caliper) variants ensure compatibility with a wide range of tubular sizes, from small diameter tubing to large casing.
Versatile Deployment — Memory or SRO modes via wireline or coil tubing, with our specialty logging technicians ensuring expert operation in any environment.
Through Tubing Efficiency — Slim designs and finger configurations pass restrictions, reducing downtime, costs, emissions.
Regulatory Compliance — Verifiable, high-quality data aligns with AER Directive 020 (Well Abandonment), Directive 051 (Injection Wells), Directive 080 (Well Logging), Directive 087 (Well Integrity), ID 2003-01 (SCVF/GM), Saskatchewan PNG015, and BC guidelines, accelerating approvals and enhancing LMR/LLR profiles.
Complements Tools — Pairs with MTT for full OD/ID casing inspection, or with CVT, Noise/Temperature Logging, CHAT, or Cement Bond Logs for integrated diagnostics.
Typical Output & Visualization
The Multi Finger Caliper Tool excels at internal focused diagnostics, identifying deviations in internal diameter that signal events like:
Data appears as continuous curves (internal diameter profiles), overlaid with GR/CCL for correlation. Real-time field QC aids decisions. Post-acquisition analysis of the caliper logging by our team provides detailed visualizations, deviation maps, cross-sections, statistical reports, and intuitive defect highlighting.
